URBAN ADVENTURES II

An important city north of Israel was צור TSOOR (Tyre, in present-day Lebanon).
The name means "fortress" or "citadel."  Following up yesterday's post, you'd think this was a popular name for cities without high hilltops, like Greece, or forests, like Eastern Europe.

With the same  dental-liquid sound,  טירה  DTeeRaH  means TURRET or TOWER.  That why T-R appears in ancient fortress -city names like  TROY, TROYES, and TURIN.

The second entry down will tell you why CAIRO and KHARTOUM sound like a European COURT.

TOWER     DTeeYRaH    Tet-Yod-Resh-Hey

TEE-RAH___ _ _____טירה_____   ____[TR]

ROOTS: TOWER is from Old English tur and Latin turns (tower). Anglo Saxon torr is a tower or rock.

טירה DTeeYRaH is a TURRET, a fortified town, village or enclosure, a wall all around (Numbers 31:20).  Related dental-liquids include:    צור  T(S)OOR is a rock of refuge (II Sam. 22:3);  בצר BaTSaR is to fortify;     מבצר  MiBHTSaR is a fortress or stronghold (Numbers 32:36).  Another  צר Tsadi-Resh tower is the  צריח TSaReeYa[K]H of Judges 9:49.  The Edenic front of the neck is below. See related vertical TR words at “TREE” and TL words at "TALL."

BRANCHES:  Tower in French is tour, in  Italian and Spanish is torre.

צורT(S)OAR is a flint (Exodus 4:25),  צור    T(S)OOR is a large rock (Exodus 33:21). Huge rocky redoubts recall Masada or the Rock of Gibraltar.  טורה DTOORaH (a mountain) is Aramaic (Daniel 2:35).

The English word TOR means a tower, rock or high rocky hill. The TURTLE may be better understood as nature's living TURRET or fortification.

The TURNING TURRET of human anatomy, optimally a lovely TOWER, is the neck or throat, the  צואר TSaVAhR (Genesis 41:42).  The suggestion of dental-liquid synonyms is from  Brian Beckman.  Harkavy links . צואר TSaVAhR to  TSOOR, to straighten, which is like  ישר YaSHahR, straight – see this fricative-liquid at “SERIES.”

The ancient city of  צור TSOOR (TYRE, southertn Lebanon) was surely a walled stronghold. related; TR cities like Tours, Troy, Troyes, and Turin are also likely  named after fortifications, the earlier version of a gated community. TROY, in fact, has been linked to  (צר Tsadi-Resh/TS-R ) “tower” terms like Latin  turris and Greek  tursis.  The TROJANS built tower cities, and are linked to the ETRUSCAN civilization. (Al L. Ansley)

(IN)CARCER(ATE)    QeeYR   Koof-Yod-Res

KEER                    קיר                     [KR]

ROOTS:    INCARCERATE is to imprison or confine. The  IE “root” carcer means barrier, enclosure, prison,  from a  "Latin noun, probably borrowed from an unidentified source."

To identify the source (of  this doubled  K-R word of walling in),   קיר QeeYR means a wall (Leviticus 14:37) or (walled) city (Isaiah 15:1).   קרה      QaRaH  means to board up or seal.

Ancient cities were defended by walls, and became associated with them.  See “COURT.”

The Jewish-Aramaic    קרתא QaRTAh and   קרת  QereT (town, city) are identical with the Ugarittic and Phoenician  words, thus  cities with names like CARTHAGE.

BRANCHES:     Other ancient walled cities include CAIRO and KHARTOUM.   The official cognates of INCARCERATE are  CANCEL, CHANCEL, and CHANCELLOR.

Italian  citta (CITY) is more likely from  קרתא QaRTAh (town, city) with a dropped R, than from Indo- European “root” kei-1 (to lie; bed, couch).

Welsh caer  means a walled city.  A different word meaning “wall” and “protection,”

חומה  K[H]OAMaH, was reversed in the Japanese machi, town.
