CARS in Eden ?!

The driver slapped the steering wheel, and challenged: "You aren't going to have a Hebrew source for CAR, Habibi."

Well, Rachel is riding  a  כר  KahR in Genesis, the riding compartment or CAR of  her camel.

Read on:

CAR        KHaR       Khaf-Resh

KHAR_______כר_______[K-R]

ROOTS:   1) Whether or not it's running, CAR is supposed to derive from Latin currere (to run), from the IE “root” kers (to run).

The CAR of an elevator or an air balloon doesn't run anywhere, but is the name of the riding compartment or cab. It is therefore quite possible that words like CAR, CHARIOT and CARGO originate from an ancient term for the CARGO or passenger area of a vehicle.

Not to put the CART before the horse, camel riding and lading must have preceded even the crudest of CARRIAGES. Thus   כר  KHaR or KAR ("saddle pillow," "furniture") seems a good etymon for CAR.

The poor translations of this term in Genesis 31:34  have been updated.  We can now picture Rachel stashing her CARGO of stolen idols in a palanquin, a saddle compartment with awnings and curtains set atop her camel.  A similar rriding compartment was made for riding elephants.

2)   CAR words also deserve more moving etymons.

Double   כר  KHaR  to get   כרכרה    KiRKaRaHA (carriage), translated "dromedary" in Isaiah 66:20.  The dromedary is the fastest of camels, not unlike a COURSING COURSER (fast horse) that a  COURIER might ride.

.    K-R running words include  כרר  KaRahR (to move round, to turn in a circle, כרכר    KiRKeR (to turn about – II Samuel 6:14) and .   כרע   KaR[A]h  ( knee, leg – Leviticus 1:13

BRANCHES:     The IE “root” kers (to run) includes CHARGE, CORRIDOR, COURSE, CURSIVE, CONCOURSE, CONCUR, DISCOURSE, EXCURSION, HUSSAR, INTERCOURSE, OCCUR, INCUR, PRECURSOR, RECUR, SUCCOR, CAR, CAREER, CARGO, CARICATURE, CARRY, CHARGE, CHARIOT (see “CHARIOT”), CARPENTER, and more.

Pumping the  כרע KeR[A] (knee – Exodus 12:9) is running. Guttural-liquid-guttural knees include Eskimo sirkrok and Hawaaian koli. See the second approach at “CORRIDOR.”

For other running etymons,  חרוץ  KHaROOTS ("bestir" in 1I Samuel 5:24) is a possibility. It is related to  מהר   MAHaiR (hurry – see “HURRY”).

The wheel,   גלגל GaLGaL, and cart,  עגלה [A]GaLaH (wagon in Numbers7:3),  are merely Grimm's Law changes away from our CAR.

KR wheel-spinning etymons include: סחר  $aK[H]aR  (to go around, circulate, reel),    כרך  KoRaKH (to roll),   כרכור  KeeRKOOR (whirl, circle) and כרכר   KeeRKaR (top, distaff, spindle).  The Edenic Gimel-Lamed wheel powers  many IE wheels, like the Ukranian kolo.

Cognates of CAR not mentioned above include CAREER, CARICATURE, CARIOLE, CARRY, CORRIDOR, COURIER, COURSE, CURRENT, DISCOURSE, EXCURSION, HUSSAR, INCUR, INTERCOURSE, OCCUR (see “OCCUR”), PRECURSOR, RECOURSE, RECUR and SUCCOR (see “SUCCOR”).

קרוןQaROAN is now thw word for  a wagon, street car or railroad car.  Another Aramaic and Hebrew term to consider is   גרגר GaRaR (to pull).   גררה  GiRaRaH is a snow CARRIAGE or sleigh.  For the riding compartment seat, the CHAIR, our Khaf-Resh etymon does fine – see “CHAISE.”

See "ACCELERATE," "CYCLE" "HURRY" and "OCCUR".
