THE TSADI GIVES A FLAT-OUT GREAT PERFORMANCE AT THE PLAZA

 PLAZA      PiRZaH      Pey-Resh-Zayin-Hey
PEER-ZA_______פרזה______[PRZ à PLZ]
ROOTS: PLAZA is said to derive from Greek platus (flat, broad) and the Indo-European (IE) "root" plat (to spread).  Z, TS and T are connected here, as elsewhere where a ץ   Tsadi is prominent, and are not to be considered unrelated fricatives and dentals.

Merely effect an R to L liquid shift, noting that  פרץ  PaRaTS is to "spread abroad" (Genesis 28:14).   PaRaZ in Arabic is to spread, make level; and in Biblical Hebrew it means FLAT, open land . Within a city a  PLAZA is  פרוז PaROOZ (open, unwalled) and  פרזה  PiRZaH (open or unwalled villages - Ezekiel 38:11).

Spreading out the family of  פר  Pey-Resh spreaders, there isפרד  PaRaD (separated, spread – Genesis 13:9), פרץ  PaRaTS (separated in Arabic – see "BURST"),פרס   PaRa$ (distributed, broken apart – as in a divided hoof or פרסה   PaR$aH or the spread-winged OSPREY of Leviticus 11:3, or scattered as in Ezekiel 17:21).  פרץ  PaRaTS can mean DISPERSED,פרש   PaRaS (spread or scattered in Ezekiel 34:12) andפרשז   PaRSHayZ is also spreading in Job 26:9).

To help us get from a flat PLACE to a FLAT PLATE or PLATTER, there's פלס    PaLa$, to level  (Isaiah 26:7 – see "BALANCE") and Arabic paraz, to make level. The צ-ץ Tsadi/ST as both fricative and dental helps us move from PLACE to PLATE.  PLACE is traced to old French place (open space), and Latin placea and Greek plateia (both meaning "broad street.")

The other important Edenic etymon to bring in has excellent meaning correspondence, while the music needs standard  shifts. פרד   PaRaD is to spread abroad,  and is the source of BROAD (see "BROAD"). It deserves more than  the passing mention above, because "broad" is a natural companion of "flat."  BROAD streets and ways should sound familiar. The PLATTER-like tail and nose of the PLATYPUS and PLATYRHINE (monkey), for example, are described by the AHD as "broad flat." Another animal named for FLATNESS (of its bones) is the PLATEOSAURUS dinosaur.

פרץ  PaRaTZ can go beyond  spreading out without walls (Genesis 28:14)  to breaking down walls (Nehemiah 1:3). It does belong here with other bilabial-liquid-fricatives, even though at the BURST" entry, it is not about flat, open surfaces.
The many entries to follow this PR sub-root of spreading apart include" BRASSIERE," DISPERSE," "PARK," "PART" and "PLASTIC."
BRANCHES: Cognates of PLAZA at IE plat include FLAT, FLATTER and FLOUNDER from Germanic sources; CLAN, FLAN, PLAN, PLANT, PLANTAIN, PLANTAR, PLANTIGRADE and SUPPLANT from Latin; and PIAZZA, PLACE, PLANE, PLATE, PLATEAU, PLATEN, PLATINA, PLATFORM, PLATITUDE, PLATY- (flat), and PLATYPUS from the Greek.

Not included were BLI(N)TZ (a pancake-via Ukrainian), BROAD, PLATFORM, and PLATTER. Platz in German is an open area; PEL(VIS) is also a dish word.  Relevant words from Greek plassein (to spread out)  include (META)PLASM, –PLASIA, PLASMA, -PLAST(moldable, spreadable), PLASTER, PLASTIC, PLASTID, and –PLASTY.

These words are at a different IE "root", but pele- 2  (flat; to spread) should have roots in the PR  'roots" section above. Some of the cognates under this IE "root" include: AIRPLANE (spread-eagled like the OSPREY), EXPLAIN, (like פרש  PaRaSH), FIELD (see "WORLD"), PALM (spread apart like a PALMATE pig's foot), PLAIN, PLANE, PLANET, VELDT. POLACK and POLKA  are added to this root because Slavic polje means broad, flat land in Polish.

The plains of PERSIA or PARIS may also be named for these Edenic PRS terms. Polish plaza means a beach, so named because it is open and flat. Cognates of this PLAZA include Czech plaz, Russian plyash, Spanish playa, and, retaining the Resh, Portuguese praia.  A German open square is a Platz; a snug place or spot is a Platzchen. The outspread page of a book is a blatt (S-B).  This lets us find the English PLACE (listed above).  In Polish plask is flat, even or level, while plaz means the flat of a blade.

Albanian fletë means FLAT things, like a sheet, leaf, page, petal, lamina or vane. FLAT in Belarussian is  plosk, Bengali phla, Croatian pilosnat (flat and "level"), Czeck placatý, French plat, Hindi फ्लैट phlaia, Hungarian lapos, Korean플랫  peullaes, Kannada (India) phlā,   Lithuanian plokščias,  Polish płaski (flat, level, even),  Russian плоский ploskiy,
Slovak plocha (also: area, surface, face), Swedish platt, Ukranian ploskyy̆ and  Welsh fflat.
