Get a kabaLAH (receipt) from an Israeli waiter, not kaBALah (mystical cosmology)

Secret cabals, the making of Frankenstein, how to differentiate between your bill and which celestial spirah is guiding your life

...it's all in today's new entry:

CABAL           QaBaLaH           Koof-Bet-Lamed-Hey

Kah-BAHL-ah _____   _____קבלה____ ______[QBL]

ROOTS:  The AHD doesn't treat CABAL (a secret group of insiders).  The OED offers a reference to the CABBALA of esoteric KABBALISTS of the Hebrew Bible, but, typically, refuses to credit Hebrew with a borrowing.

In fact there is an attempt to steal the dark, secret sense of CABAL:

"… acronym for five intriguing ministers of Charles II (Cliford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley and Lauderdale), which gave the word its sinister connotations."

קבלה KABBALISTS had a reputation as a small circle of magicians. Christian CABBALISM became popular as well.  If some obscure ministers earned a name as a CABAL, it is only because dark folklore had been fostered about uncanny powers of Jewish masters of  קבלה  KABBALAH.

(Read up on the Golem of Prague, when a great kabbalist animated an artificial body with a disembodied soul... and how this gave rise to Frankenstein.)  The Kabbalists received this wisdom on a master-to-apprentice basis only.  This body of knowledge is thus named for  קבל QaBeL, to receive , accept (II Chronicles 29:16).

Both RECEIVE and ACCEPT are among the many cognates of "cable" (see "CABLE") at the  IE "root" kap (to grasp).   Even after busrides in Israel one gets a  קבלה KaBaLaH ( RECEIPT, accent on the last syllable; the mystical wisdom has an accent on the second syllable).

CAPACITY is about how much a vessel holds, not grasps. The Edenic Koof-Bet etymon has the capacity to engender many of the alleged derivatives of  the  IE "root" kap (to grasp), and, as usual, there is a like sounding family of guttural-bilabial "holding"  or "hand" words.

These include:  חפן K[H]oaPHeN  (handful -- see "PUGNACIOUS,"  כף KahF (palm of the hand -- see "CUFF") and the three "rope" words at "CABLE."

BRANCHES:  The  IE "root" kap  holds way too many "deriviatives", as usual. They include:  ANTICIPATE, BEHOOVE, CAPABLE, CAPSULE, CAPTION, CAPTIVATE, CAPTOR, CAPTURE, CATCH, CHASE, CHASSISCONCEIVE, DECEIVE, EXCEPT, HAFT, HAVE, HEAVY (see "HEFT" from כבד   KaBHaiD, heavy), HAWK, HEAVE, INCEPTION, INTERCEPT, MUNICIPAL, OCCUPY, PARTICIP[ATE, PERCEIVE, PRECEPT, RECEIVE, RECOVER, RECUPERATE, and SUSCEPTIBLE.

Only a handful fit Edenic standards of sound and sense, and have a guttural-bilabial "receiving" element from the Edenic words above.

Non-Indo-European "receive" words with that guttural-bilabial "receiving" element may include; Hungarian kap and Swahili kapekea.  Got any more? We'd be glad to accept them.
