The Devil and Daniel Webster Say Shema (the Lord is One)

GOOD       EGeD      Aleph-Gimel-Dalet
EGG-ed_________אגד____   _____[GD]
ROOTS:  The alleged Indo-European (IE) “root” of GOOD is ghedh (to unite, join, fit).
That which is united is GOOD, like some really TOGETHER threads someone wore in the Sixties.

גד GahD,  fortune, is the simpler way to "GOOD (Genesis 30:11).  As in the GODLY discussion below, this entry would like to pursue the more analytical, "united" view of GOODNESS. With either good luck or good scholarship, the Edenic approach here is at one with secular wisdom.

אגד AGahD or EyGaiD is to unite, tie and bind together. אגודה  AGOODaH is a "bunch" in Exodus 12:22; in II Samuel 2:25 "the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band."  גדד  GaDaD is to gather troops;  גדוד GIDOOD is a troop or group - I Kings 11:24.    גדרGHeDeR, Ayin-Dalet-Resh,  is a gathering called a herd (Genesis 32:17) – see “HERD.”
The  גיד GeeYD, sinew – Genesis 32:32, binds bones together – see “GUT.”  To bind,  ע-ק-דAyin-Koof-Dalet, is this same guttural-dental sound and sense of gathering together.  Also bringing things like cattle TOGETHER are     גדר GeDeR (gate – Numbers 22:24) and   גדר GaDaR (to fence in) – see “GATHER.”

That which is “together”   in Sixties slang)  is GOOD.
That which is isolate, and not good,  is with the  ב-ד  Bet-Dalet words at “BAD.”
Another guttural-dental theme of togetherness is the ח-ד  Het-Dalet of oneness at “JUXTAPOSE.”

BRANCHES:   For related G-D and GH-D zoological gatherings, see “GOAT” and “HERD.”
Matching the GD cognates of GOOD, GATHER and TOGETHER are words like Welsh cidys, a bundle or fagot.  In British dialect to KID a KID is to bundle a bundle, ultimately from our
אגד   EGeD (bundle, bunch) and   אגד EyGaiD (to bind together).

The  normal “goodin a Hebrew dictionary is   טוב DTOABH.  In Persian this dental-bilabial is reversed to fayde.  Here is the source of FIT.
There are many IE cognates that are inverses of each other.  Natural creolization shifts letters and occasionally creates a metathesis, but it does not turn words on their heads.  Only a neurological Babel-babble explains these  reversals.

A “good” example is the Irish “good” or “well:”  dag- , and  deg-. Dug is good in Sumerian, which some linguists claim as IE.  Other examples of reversed IE cognates include ALTO/TALL, FOLIO/LEAF and PHILO/LOVE. Many more  are in The Origin of Speeches.

“Good” is in the eye of the culture. We all think in Edenic, but we often think differently. To the Russians “good” is skillful, as in kharoshi (good)  from חרש K[H]aRaSH, work of a skilled craftsman – Exodus 28:11. From this guttural-liquid, we can add much insight from the Korean.
Korean chall  (well, nicely, skillfully), has a liquid shift (Resh/R to L) and has dropped the end-Shin/SH.  But we learn how certain cultures think "skilled" when they come up with a term for "good."  We all still think in Edenic (Pre-Hebrew).

GOOD is naturally associated with the benevolent Creator or deity, Gott  in German.   Beyond  divine GOODNESS (see "DIVINE") there is an ancient deity whose name is "good" :  גד GahD, the Babylonian god of fortune.  As noted above, גד GahD means "fortune,"  and Leah so names her fifth son.  In light of the centrality of declaring the oneness of the Creator of diversity in Judaism, the ג-ד  Gimel-Dalet  sub-root meaning "together," as אגד EGeD is to unite, must be considered the higher good.

It is remarkable that non-Jewish scholars found a root of togetherness, of ultimate oneness, in the roots of GOOD and GODLY.  Western theology, even before Neo-Platonism and Near-Eastern Mystery Faiths, has always separated GOOD and evil:  one from a god of GOODNESS and the other from some form of Devil or Satan.

Hebrew Bible theology denies evil. (Of course Man has the Free Will to choose wrongly, see "WRONG.")  Nothing evil or not-good, even sickness and death, comes from other than the Hebrew Creator.  We mortals are like children who get upset if a parent displays tough love.  If we mature, we can later understand how the old parent really had it TOGETHER.

--------------------------
And you thought Devil Worshipers were a few weirdos sacrificing pigeons in the park.
Even in the more monotheistic "sister religion" pilgrims on the Haj" symbolically stone Satan.
Some Jews overdo an aversion to an "Evil Inclination," but this is never embodied by a fallen angel or other
immortal competitor.

Once we see how the same words separated us, the same words will bring us back together (Zeph. 3:9).
