Post-Attonement White Power

ALBINO    HuLBaNaH    Hey-Lamed-Bet-Noon-Hey

HULL-BUN-AH ________הלבנה___________[LBN]

ROOTS:  The pigment-challenged ALBINO is thought to have come from the theoretical  IE “root” albho (white).   The ALBINO is white.

לבן La[V]aN or LaBHaN is white in Hebrew; הלבנה HaLBaNaH means whitening :  " . . .though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow (YaLBeNoo)" -- Isaiah  1:18.

Just white out the vowels and there's a perfect match. Unfortunately, the N got washed out too in the Latin albus (white).  The Indo-European (IE) “root” albho (white) likewise has no N, despite names like Alban and Albania.

ALBUMIN or egg white is הלבון  HaLBOAN in Hebrew.חלב   [K]HaLaBH (milk) indicates that the two-letter root in Hebrew for whiteness is just LB or LV. לבנה   Li[V]NaH is whiteness (Exodus 24:10),  לבנה  Li[V]NaH is a white poplar (Genesis 30:37)  andלבונה   Li[V]OANaH is a white, sweet-smelling resin (Exodux 30:34).

BRANCHES:    LEBANON is named for its landmark white, snow-capped mountains.  ALBANIA is similarly mountainous, while ALBION (the oldest name for Briton) might come from Continental  immigrants seeing the white cliffs of Dover.   The ALPS are snowy white, but the Noon/N has melted away. More missing N in “white” words below.

The Bible's לבן LV(N) is a verb of whitening and bleaching. Therefore, some 20 words from Latin lavare (to wash) should be tossed in the hamper, such as LAVA, LAVATORY, LAVE, LAVER and LAVISH. Spanish lavanderia is a laundry, where clothes are whitened or cleaned. The N didn’t wash out in lavanderia.

There are L-V reversals like Malay (Gani dialect) wulan (white) and Fijian vula-vula (white). Finnish white is valkean; vaalea means light or pale.  For PALE, see “PALL.” Welsh bal (white spot) gives us BALD. The Malay is a purer white in that it swaps #1-#2 letters but remains closer to LVN than BLOND, BLAND, BLEND, BLIND, BLINK (milk), BLANCH and BLANK. BLANKET is from whiteness, as is CARTE BLANCHE (from French).

The Italian (bianco), Potuguese (branco), Romanian (alb) and Spanish (blanco) demonstrate what happened to Lamed-Bhet-Noon/L-BH-N. Like LAUNDRY above, Italian laundry is a white word: biancheria.

The scholars feel that ALBUM, ALFRED, ALPINE, AUBURN, ELF, LAUNDRY and OLIVER all descended from the made-up  IE “root” albho (white). The Fijian term above reverses the LV in the same way the Russian (byeli) and Polish (BIALY) words for white do. In French blanc is the simple M223 metathesis of  לבן LaBHaN, but the word for (white) wheat is ble. It has dropped the N, and looks as distant from LaBHaN as the Slavic whites.

The Irish terms for white, fionn and ban, seem to have have lost the initial L. The name ALVAH is traced to Hebrew.

Equivalent to "Whitey" is the Biblical  לבן La[V]aN (always Anglicized Laban). לבונה LeVOANaH (frankincense) may be behind the aromatic but troubled history of the word LAVENDER.

WAN (pale) has no IE “root”, and is likely an LVN that has lost its liquid.

            Vanora
means white wave in Old Welsh.

For more of LVN, and the shiny white (or silvery) orb than counts months -- see "LUNAR."

In another “white” = “clean” equation, רחץ RaK[H]aTS is to wash. Reverse to Tsadi-Het-Resh, צחר TS[K]HaR, to whiten.  As understood from the lavanderia (Spanish LAUNDROMAT), laundering often meant bleaching. BLEACH  has the Lamed and Bhet (reversed), but no trace of the Noon. It still smells of לבן LaBHaN.

Bleach in French, blanchir, German bleichen, Italian imblancare, Portuguese branquar (white is branco) and Polish bielic show how common it is for the Noon to drop, and for other letter shifts and prefixes and suffixes to disguise an Edenic etymon (like our לבן LaBHaN).

Just as BLEACH took on a guttural, Modern Greek “to bleach” is lefkeno (toss the guttural) .  Even in English, to BLANCH is to whiten. Even if it means turning pale for emotional reasons.

VANILLIN ( see “VANILLA) is a white, chrystalline substance. If not from Latin vagina, case, pod, sheath, words like VANILLA could be an M231 metathesis of לבן La(V)aN, white.

Linguists Berlin and Kay have linked the following words for “white”  to לבן La(V)aN:

vellai Plains Tamil : Dravidian (S. India)
velle Paliyan : Dravidian (S. India)
vellá Malayalam : Dravidian (S. India)
belyy Russian : Indo-European (Russia)
byalo Bulgarian : Indo-European (Bulgaria)
(blanco) Spanish : Indo-European (Spain)
(blanc) Catalan : Indo-European (Spain)
(a-li) Arawak : Andean-Equatorial (Surinam)

More world white words at “HOAR” and “WHITE.”

Somebody asked me why I wore a white frock jacket (klttle in Yiddish) on Yom Kippur.
The questioner was not the kind who could hear a serious answer involving one's burial shroud and DOOMsday/Yom HaDiN/ judgment and mercy.
So I just said, "Because today the Lord can say that  lots of his sons are doctors."
